Area where brownsnakes are found in South Dakota

Characteristics:

* Dark markings under and/or behind each eye

* Grayish brown to reddish brown in color

* Light stripe down the center of the back, bordered by a parallel row of dark spots

* Pinkish or tan belly

* Keeled scales

* Nonvenomous

* Diet: earthworms and insect larvae

* Habitat: moist woodland areas near clearings and wetlands

* Distribution: last record: Roberts County (1922)
