Area where redbelly snake is found in South Dakota

Characteristics:

* Slender body which may be gray, brown, or reddish-brown

* A white chin with a red-colored belly

* Light-colored spots on neck

* Faint light stripe(s) down the back

* Keeled scales

* Nonvenomous

* Diet: earthworms, slugs, and small insects

* Habitat: woodland areas and moist grassy
   meadows

* Distribution: extreme eastern South Dakota and the Black Hills
