Characteristics:

* Small and slender

* Greenish upper body, head and tail uniformly green, with a whitish belly

* Smooth scales

* Nonvenomous

* Diet: Feeds primarily on insect

* Habitat: prefers moist, grassy areas in prairies and meadows

* Distribution: Black Hills, northern areas of the state—east of the Missouri River, and extreme southeastern South Dakota
