Rocky Point Recreation Area Hosts Nature Day Camp
BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. - Rocky Point Recreation Area and Custer State Park are teaming up to offer a Nature Day Camp on Thursday, July 26. The camp is designed for kids ages 7-12. Hosted at the park's shelter house, which is located along the park's main roadway, the camp begins at 9:30 a.m. and concludes at 12 p.m. Children under the age of 7 are welcome to attend, but they need to be supervised by an accompanying adult or chaperone.
Nature Day Camps offer hands-on educational activities that relate to the surrounding habitat. They also tend to compliment the significance behind the hosting site. "Nature day camps are excellent ways for children to learn about the outdoors,” said Bradley Block, Chief of Interpretation. “We have witnessed success with our monthly camps at Custer State Park and Angostura Recreation Area. We are excited to expand this service to another unique and beautiful natural setting."
The scheduled camp is focused on fishing, allowing participants to learn some basics behind this popular recreational activity. From placing a worm on a hook to casting the line, from cleaning the catch to making a pop can fishing pole, kids will be exposed to several activities. Fishing poles and reels, equipment and bait will be furnished. Due to limited items, participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear.
"Families tour Rocky Point quite often during the summer season, enjoying the recreational opportunities associated with the reservoir,” said Park Manager Brad Nelson. “To complement this visitation, we have teamed up with the programming staff of Custer State Park to offer some educational activities for our younger visitors."
All participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Sunscreen, hats, water and snacks are recommended for each child. Parents and guardians are also welcome to experience the event.
The Nature Day Camp is free for the general public; however, a valid 2007 South Dakota park entrance license is required on all vehicles entering the recreation area. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the entrance booth at Rocky Point at (605) 641-0023 or by email at rockypoint@state.sd.us.
