Newton Hills Hosts Annual Sioux River Folk Music Festival

 

PIERRE, S.D. –  From local talent to a Grammy Award winning musician, Newton Hills State Park is preparing for three days of music, dancing and family fun during the annual Sioux River Folk Festival. The festival starts Friday, August 3 and runs through Sunday, August 5.

 

The festival kicks off Friday at 7 p.m. with performances by Snakebeard Jackson, Diana Jones, Liz Carroll and Grammy Award winner Laurie Lewis and the Right Hands.

 

The entertainment line-up continues on Saturday at noon with shows by Fiddler Nelson and Jim Groth. Friday night performers will also present shows on Saturday with the exception of Snakebeard Jackson. Music inspired workshops will also be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. The last day of the festival features a gospel show from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Newton Hills State Park is located six miles south of Canton off County 135. A park entrance license is required on all vehicles entering the park. Daily and annual entrance licenses can be purchased at South Dakota state park offices or at the park entrance station.

Farm Island Recreation Area Hosts Sprint Triathlon August 4

 

PIERRE, S.D. – Early-morning athletes can get their hearts pumping at the annual Riverman/Riverwoman Sprint Triathlon on August 4, held at Farm Island Recreation Area near Pierre.

 

The race includes a 0.4-mile swim along the beach, 18 miles of biking along SD Highway 34 and a 3.5-mile run on the island trail.  For safety reasons, bicycle helmets and brightly colored skullcaps are required.

 

The competition will be divided into six divisions by age with separate classes for men and women. Teams will complete as a ground, split activities between three people and can be comprised of any age men, women or youth. Medals will be awarded to the top two finishers in each division.

 

Registration and check-in is from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. at the swim beach. Entries will not be accepted after registration has closed. The rules meeting will be at 7:40 a.m. The race will start immediately following the rules meeting. Participants are required to attend this meeting; those who do not attend will not be able to participate. Registration is $30 for an individual and $60 per team. Participants who registered by July 13 will receive a free shirt. The registration form and race map are available online at www.SDparks.info or by contacting the park office. Participants can also register the morning of the event.

Families Invited to ‘Survive’ at The Outdoor Campus

 

Families are invited to try to “Survive The Outdoor Campus” from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 4, at the second annual intern-planned event.

 

Interns will lead participants through a series of survival tactics needed to brave the wild. Participants will learn water purification, trapping, shelter construction, plant uses and much more.
