Roy Lake State Park Now Has Adventure Campsite
PIERRE, S.D. – For the first time, South Dakota State Parks is now offering an exciting, new way to camp—adventure camping. Staff at Roy Lake State Park in the northeast part of the state has been busy clearing and constructing a canoe-in campsite.
Adventure seekers will begin their trip at Roy Lake, canoe almost two miles, portage from Roy to Bullhead Lake and then canoe a short distance to the campsite on an island in Bullhead Lake.
“This is about the closest campers can get to a wilderness trip in northeast South Dakota,” said Dave Daberkow, park manager. “This site will offer a different recreational experience than a traditional park campsite.”
The canoe-in Bullhead Lake campsite will be the first adventure site offered by the Division. Campers will find a fire pit and outdoor toilet at the campsite and boat docks at all launch sites. The portage is only about 150 yards so anyone should be able to use the canoe campsite.
For those people who do not own canoes or camping equipment, both can be rented at Roy Lake State Park. Reservations for the equipment and use of the campsite are required.
Roy Lake State Park is located three miles southwest of Lake City off SD Hwy 10.
For reservations at or additional information on the adventure campsite, call Roy Lake State Park at (605) 448-5701. For more information on South Dakota State Parks, visit www.SDparks.info or call (605) 773-3391.

Go on Shannon’s Survival Hike at Lewis and Clark Recreation Area
PIERRE, S.D. – Visitors are invited to learn about the adventure of Private George Shannon, the youngest member of the Lewis and Clark expedition at age 19, on Saturday, Aug. 25 at Lewis and Clark Recreation Area near Yankton.
Shannon became separated from the group when he was sent to fetch strayed horses. Thinking the crew had moved up river, Shannon raced to meet the boats. He became lost for two weeks until he was found exhausted and starving on Sept. 11, 1804. He quickly learned that the expedition had been downstream from him the entire time.
Participants should meet at the Gavins Point Nature Trailhead at 9:30 a.m. On this guided one-mile walk visitors will learn how Shannon survived and what edible plants he encountered while he was separated from the group.
There is no cost to participate in this program, although a park entrance license is required. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes, insect repellent and dress for the weather. This program is in addition to the regular programming held at the state parks and recreation areas.
The Walk in the Park programs are part of a series of educational, guided hikes held throughout the year in South Dakota State Parks, recreation areas and nature preserves. Park staff and volunteers lead the programs, which are co-sponsored by the S.D. Department of Health.
Lewis and Clark Recreation Area is located four miles west of Yankton off SD Hwy 52.
