Division of Parks and Recreation Honors Employees
PIERRE, S.D. - The South Dakota Division of Parks and Recreation recently recognized several individuals for their dedication and hard work in the State Parks system. The awards were part of the division’s fall meeting, held last week in Aberdeen.
“This year’s honorees were all very deserving,” said Doug Hofer, director of the Division of Parks and Recreation. "The positive attitude, dedication and hard work of these honorees can be seen in parks across the state and is enjoyed by the many visitors to South Dakota state parks and recreation areas each year."
Lynn Spomer, Pierre, was named the 2007 South Dakota State Parks Employee of the Year. Each year, one employee who exemplifies the true mission of the division is selected for this honor. Spomer, program specialist for the division, was recognized for the work she does with the volunteer program, special events and the reservation system. Linda Sandness, visitor services coordinator, said Lynn does an incredible job with all she takes on. She has a great attitude, is a hard worker and does her best to promote the department in any way she can.
Chad Kremer was honored with the Award of Appreciation. Kremer, the buffalo herd manager at Custer State Park, was recognized for the role he played in bringing the 2007 International Bison Conference to Rapid City and Custer State Park. He played a vital role in preparing the conference proposal, planning for the conference, and arranging and executing pre and post event activities held at the park. “Chad’s work at this international conference has helped move Custer State Park’s status to the forefront of the industry,” said Gary Brundige, resource program manager at Custer State Park.
The 2007 Team Award was presented to park staff that helped restore the new group lodge at Newton Hills State Park. Recipients of the award were park manager Eric Vanderstouwe of Beresford, secretary Linette Ulrickson of Canton, volunteer Darcy Vlk of Canton, park manager Derek Dorr of Canistota, park manager Dan Grewing of North Sioux City, conservation technician Dennis Stoffel of Hudson, conservation foreman Jim Nolet of Canton, park manager Jason Bauman of Brandon and maintenance worker Lane Karli of Sioux Falls. “Each member of this team worked hard to get the lodge ready for visitors and put their individual talents towards making the lodge look great,” said Mark Steck, regional park supervisor. “This project could not have been completed without them.”
The 2007 Seasonal of the Year Award was given to Amanda Hellman. Hellman, a native of California currently living in Sioux Falls, has worked three summers for South Dakota State Parks, the last two at Big Sioux Recreation Area. Hellman is being recognized for going above and beyond her duties and working continually to make the park clean and welcoming for visitors. “Working with Mandy has been a privilege,” said Bauman. “She has a strong work ethic and takes pride in the work she does.”
Fred and Mary Meadows were named South Dakota State Park Volunteers of the Year. This was the Meadows second year serving as campground hosts at West Bend Recreation Area. The Meadows were commended by park visitors and staff for their friendliness and willingness to help out campers in the park. “Many people have told me that Fred and Mary are one of the reasons they enjoy camping at West Bend,” said John Bame, park manager.
The 2007 Innovative Programming Award was presented to Jody Moats. Moats of Westfield, Iowa, is the naturist at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve near North Sioux City. She has created new, fun and educational programs for children and adults to enjoy year-round. “It takes a great deal of innovation and motivation to create programs that attract and inspire young people and adults by the thousands,” said Linda Sandness.
