Open House Scheduled at Blue Dog State Fish Hatchery
WAUBAY, S.D.--The S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Department announces the near completion of a $3 million renovation project at Blue Dog State Fish Hatchery located near Waubay.
On May 10, from 10 a.m. until noon, the public is invited to attend an open house at Blue Dog Hatchery located one-half mile west and one mile north of Waubay. Since its inception in 1982, Blue Dog Hatchery has raised 13 different fish species that have been stocked into South Dakota lakes for sport-fishing opportunities.
“Over the years, the normal wear and tear of climate and 25 years of filtering water caused many infrastructure problems that needed to be addressed,” according to hatchery manager Jerry Broughton. The top concern was the leaking rearing ponds that are now covered with durable liners. Other improvements included updating pumping and filtering systems and modifications to the existing hatchery building.
Hatchery staff, as well as Pierre administrators, will be on hand to provide tours and answer questions about the facility. Refreshments will be provided. In addition, newly hatched walleye and yellow perch eggs will be available for viewing.
