Custer State Park Offers Snowshoe Outings

It’s that time of year again! Custer State Park is gearing up for a winter recreational outing. Feb. 14 at 1:00 pm., the park will host a guided snowshoe hike starting from the Peter Norbeck Visitor Center located near the historic State Game Lodge. Snowshoes are available for those who do not have their own.

In the spirit of Valentines Day a park guide will lead participants along the Custer’s 3-mile “Lover’s Leap Trail.” Along this popular trail visitors will learn about the many habitats of Custer State Park as well as the legend of the two unfortunate “lovers” for whom the trail is named.

“Snowshoeing is an excellent way to explore the winter world in Custer State Park,” said Lydia Poppen, Custer State Park naturalist. “As snow covers the ground it gives the park a new look. Winter is a good opportunity to see wildlife tracks, and take advantage of the quiet time in the Park. Snowshoeing doesn’t require a lot of skill and is an excellent cardio workout,” added Poppen.

There is no cost for the hike; however, a park entrance license is required. Participants are reminded to dress appropriately for the weather, as temperatures in the Black Hills can be unpredictable. In the event of no snow, a hike will be held. Due to a limited supply of snowshoes, reservations are required and can be made by calling the Peter Norbeck Visitor Center at (605) 255-4828.

The Walk in the Park program is a series of educational, guided hikes held throughout the year in South Dakota state parks, recreation areas and nature preserves. Parks staff and volunteers lead the programs. For more the Walk in the Park program, visit www.sdgfp.info/Parks or call (605) 773-3391.
