South Dakota State Parks Celebrate Earth Day
PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota’s State Parks and Recreation Areas are celebrating Earth Day with the expansion of their recycling program in the parks.

This summer, all parks will offer aluminum can recycling, and select parks will expand recycling to include paper, plastic, glass or cardboard. Not all parks will be able to accept all recyclable materials, because collection services are not available in all areas. Receptacles will be clearly marked with the materials that are accepted, and more opportunities will be added as collection services become available.

“The outdoors is such a big part of our everyday lives in South Dakota,” said Bob Schneider, assistant director for South Dakota State Parks. “Our park visitors have a close connection with nature and care about the future of our environment. We’re pleased that we’re now able to offer even more recycling opportunities in the state parks.”

If you’re looking for a way to participate in Earth Day and enjoy a day at a state park, Lake Thompson Recreation Area near Lake Preston is hosting a Shoreline Cleanup on Earth Day, April 22, from 10 a.m. to noon. Those who wish to partake are asked to meet at the Lake Thompson parking lot, wear comfortable shoes, and bring a good pair of gloves. Water, coffee and cookies will be provided to volunteers.

“Earth day is a good day to clean up the winter mess in preparation for the summer season,” said John Christensen, park manager at Lake Thompson.  “Participants will help clean up garbage and debris from a three-quarter mile section of beach.”

The clean up is open to anyone willing to help. Park entrance licenses are not required. Lake Thompson Recreation Area is located six miles southwest of Lake Preston off US 14.
