Mountain Lion Shot in
Douglas
County
PIERRE,
S.D.
– South Dakota
has had its first mountain lion taken as part of the mountain lion hunting
season in progress outside the
Black Hills.
The
mountain lion hunting season is open through Dec. 15 to licensed landowners
and who are hunting mountain lions on their own land.
The mountain lion was shot on Friday in
Douglas
County
in the Delmont area. An initial check of the lion by personnel from the
Department of Game, Fish and Parks found that the lion had no front claws.
Mountain lions raised in captivity typically have their front claws removed.
Weather conditions hampered the transfer of the mountain lion carcass to the
Rapid City
regional GFP office. As soon as the carcass can be transported, a full
examination will be conducted.
The mountain lion hunting season within the
Black Hills
was concluded in late October.
