Which
campgrounds accept reservations? - 2007
arrivals Campsite and picnic shelter reservations are accepted within 90 days of your arrival (except at Custer). At most state parks, reservations can be made for arrival dates between May 16 and September 1, 2008. Big Sioux, Custer, Newton Hills, Snake Creek, Lewis & Clark and Palisades accept autumn reservations for arrival dates through October 6, 2008. Custer accepts reservations for the entire camping season (May 16-Oct. 6, 2008) beginning Jan. 2. Checkout time for campsites is 4 p.m. At Custer, checkout time for campsites is at noon. Camping cabins may be reserved year-round through the reservation center within 90 days of the arrival date. Checkout time for cabins is noon. (Cabins at the following parks are closed for a period of time due to bald eagles roosting in the area: Randall Creek from Oct. 1 to April 30, Chief White Crane from Nov. 1 to March 31, and Oahe Downstream from Nov. 1 to March 31. In addition, cabins at Lake Cochrane and Springfield are only available May 1 to Oct. 1.) The group lodge facilities at Shadehill, Mina Lake, Newton Hills, Oahe Downstream, Palisades and Lake Thompson may be reserved year-round through the reservation center beginning November 1 for all arrival dates during the upcoming calendar year. Checkout time for lodges is 11 a.m. A three-night stay is required for campsites and camping cabins on holiday weekends at all parks except Custer, which does not require a minimum stay. Several sites may be reserved with a single call, but payment of all fees for all sites is required before a confirmation is made. The reservation call center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (CT) from October to December, and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. from January to September. The call center is closed on the following holidays: New Year's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Individual sites become available both online and through the call center at 7 a.m. CT (Jan.-Sept.) or at 9 a.m. CT (Oct.-Dec.) on the first day of the 90-day window. After the 90-day window has opened, online reservations can be made 24 hours a day. During the week reservations are accepted until noon (CT) the day before arrival and weekend reservations are accepted until noon (CT) on Thursday when using a credit card. If using any other payment method, reservations must be made a minimum of 10 days in advance. Reservations are accepted until noon (CT) one day prior to arrival when using a credit card, or 10 days for other payment methods. Weekend reservations are accepted Thursday until noon (CT) for the upcoming Friday and/or Saturday. Campers who have made a reservation are permitted to arrive at any time during their reservation. This may result in some sites remaining empty for a period of time. The park is obligated to hold a reserved site until a cancellation is made. We thank you for your understanding when you see unoccupied reserved sites. Making Reservations for
Accessible Facilities Fees and Payments There is a $5 per site non-refundable reservation fee (not applicable to South Dakota residents). If two camping units share a designated double-up site, each unit must pay the camping fee. A camping unit is a powered vehicle, motor home, camping bus, pull-type camper, tent or any other device designed for sleeping. Additional tents for a family (parents or grandparents and their unmarried minor children) are considered a single camping unit. A cancellation fee equal to one night's camping will be charged for each campsite reserved if you cancel your reservation, either through the reservation center of after arriving at the park. A camper who cancels a reservation for a camping cabin will be charged a fee of $15. People who try to beat the 90-day window by making their reservations for days earlier than they plan to arrive and then cancel those earlier days at a later time, will lose their entire reservation and be charged the cancellation fee when they cancel days at the front end of their reservation. This policy does not apply to lodges or to Custer State Park. A $15 fee will be charged for canceling a lodge reservation more than 30 days in advance. A fee of $25/night will be charged on lodge cancellations made less than 30 days in advance.
Group Reservations more To qualify as a group reservation, a minimum of 10 sites must be reserved. Reservations can only be made for those sites designated as group sites. A limited number of group sites are available in each park. Prime sites are not included. Cabins and picnic shelters may be included in some parks. Group reservations are not available for holiday weekends, some special event weekends and other days as designated by the park manager. For more information and a complete listing of parks accepting group reservations, click here. Non-profit youth groups can reserve areas at Custer through the reservations system. For other parks, the group should contact the park directly. Other Facilities
