Custer State Park’s Volunteer Program

INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES

Campsites
A number of full service campsites have been developed for use by Park volunteers. Services include water, electricity, sewer and in some cases, phone hookups. Telephones are at the volunteer’s expense. Pay phones are located throughout the Park.

Hours of Service
Volunteers will be expected to provide a minimum of 24 hours of service during the summer or 32 hours of service throughout the winter for each week of their stay.

Uniforms
Custer State Park will provide uniforms to include pants, shirts, hats, coats and name tags. Winter volunteers will need to provide their own clothing to fit the type of services they will be providing.

Use of State Vehicles
From their duty stations to their daily work locations, volunteers will be provided state vehicles. Volunteers will be required to provide their own transportation from their campsites to their duty stations. Most duty stations are within walking or biking distance of the trailer sites and Park housing. All volunteers will be required to have a valid driver’s license.

Minimum Amount of Service
Volunteers will be expected to provide their services for a minimum of one month. Volunteer campsites open in April and close late October.

Entrance Licenses
A free annual Park entrance license will be provided to volunteers.

Black Hills Badlands and Lakes Card
Volunteers will receive a Black Hills Badlands and Lakes card which allows free or reduced rates to most attractions throughout the Black Hills.

Pets
Pets that remain in the trailer will pose no problems. Large pets, such as dogs, cats, etc., will be discussed on a case by case basis.

Training/Orientation
Park staff conduct two major training/orientation sessions, the first in mid May, second in early June. All Volunteers will receive specific job related training prior to beginning their position.

Hopefully these guidelines will answer most of your questions, however, please feel free to contact the Park office Monday through Friday (except holidays) should you have other questions or need an issue clarified.
