Custer State Parks Volunteer ProgramCuster State Parks volunteer program is designed for individuals and couples who wish to volunteer their services in exchange for a free trailer site, complete with hookups. The trailer sites are approximately 15 miles from Custer, population 2,000, and 45 minutes from Rapid City, population 60,000. Pay telephones are located throughout the Park. Some sites have phone hookups available at the site. Volunteer positions will not replace or eliminate any of the Parks current staff. However, by utilizing volunteers the Park will be able to expand services to our visitors. Volunteers selected to work in Custer State Park will have the opportunity to spend a part or all of their summer in the beautiful setting of the Park. At 71,000 acres, Custer State Park is one of the largest state parks in the United States. It features pine covered mountains, open prairies, mountain streams, four man-made lakes, unique geological formations, early pioneer history, and numerous wildlife species, including one of the nations largest publicly owned bison herds.
