Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival

Buffalo Roundup Arts Festival

What you need to know

Buffalo Roundup
The actual Buffalo Roundup will begin at 9:30 a.m. Guests must stay in the viewing areas until the herd is safely in the corrals, generally around noon.

Parking
Lots open at 6:15 a.m. and close at 9 a.m. Handicap parking is provided in all areas, otherwise personal vehicles are not allowed at the corrals.

Concessions
Pancakes and sausages along with beverages will be available at 6:15 a.m., in both viewing areas. Lunch will be served at the corrals once the buffalo are safely in the corrals until 2:00 p.m. Fee for both.

Exhibit Vendors
Will be located in both viewing areas and at the corrals following the roundup.

Buffalo Handling
Testing, branding, and sorting will begin on Monday at 1 p.m. until about 5 p.m. and will continue the week of October 5th.

What to Bring
Folding chairs, cameras, binoculars, layered clothing, rain gear and sun screen.

Viewing areas
You will need to determine which viewing area you will be going to prior to Monday morning.

North Parking and Viewing
Following the green route on the map

South Parking and Viewing
Follow the red route on the map

Motorcoaches
Will park in the South Lot but access that area via the green route.

Camper units
We encourage you not to bring your camper. Call 605-255-4515 for drop locations. If you do bring it, follow the green route on the map but you will be directed to the south lot.

Departing
All vehicles will depart the way they entered.

Shuttle Service
Free shuttle service is provided from the viewing areas into the corrals and back to the parking lots. Some people choose to walk.

Pets
The park encourages you to leave your pet at home or in your vehicle.

(note: Monday September 28 is the actual Roundup Day)

Enjoy three days of South Dakota's finest artists and craftsmen at the 16th Annual Buffalo Roundup Arts Festival. Start you morning with a pancake feed, enjoy on-going Western and Native American entertainment or purchase fine artwork or South Dakota Made Products. It's a South Dakota experience you won't want to miss. The first 2 festival days are held on the festival grounds adjacent the Peter Norbeck Visitor Center. On the 3rd and final day the festival is held on the festival grounds located at the buffalo corrals complex on Monday - Buffalo Roundup Day.

 
Chili Cookoff

Join the "herd" at the 20th Annual Buffalo Wallow Chili Cookoff in Custer State Park where the competition is just as hot as the chili! Cooking begins at 11 a.m., public tasting at 1 p.m., cost is $3 adults and $2 for children Enjoy live entertainment as you stroll the heritage arts and crafts exhibits.

44th Annual Buffalo Roundup

Monday - September 28, 2009 - Reservation for event not required

Feel the thunder and join the herd at the 44th Annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup. Watch cowboys and cowgirls as they roundup and drive the herd of 1,500 buffalo into the buffalo corrals. This is the herd size number under normal rangeland conditions. The roundup is the management tool that is used to adjust the herd size accordingly.

Following the actual roundup stay and watch as park staff sort, brand, and vaccinate the herd in preparation for the fall Buffalo Sale.

 

Enjoy on-going Western and Native American entertainment and browse craft booths located on site at the Buffalo Corrals Complex.
