See full details below!

Each fall the wild west returns to Custer State Park
during the annual Buffalo Roundup.

43nd Annual Buffalo Roundup

It's a crisp September morning and songbirds are chirping. Dew glistens on the amber grasses, as a low rumble grows louder and louder. Suddenly, hundreds of bison stampede over a hilltop.

Park staff, cowboys and cowgirls saddle up to move the park's 1,400 bison to the buffalo corrals. The actual Roundup Day is held on Monday, September 29, 2008. The event is open to public viewing. Preceding buffalo roundup day there are  Arts Festival events and activities that take place on Saturday September 27, and Sunday September 29 that make this a full 3 days of fun.

The roundup serves several purposes. The first is to move the entire herd into a system of corrals along the Wildlife Loop Road.

Once in the corrals, the animals are sorted by the park's resource personnel. Most are released back into the park, while others remain in the corrals until the November 15, 2008 buffalo auction.

Animals to be sold at the auction are tested for tuberculosis and brucellosis. All calves are branded and the female calves are also tested for brucellosis.

The annual Buffalo Roundup is an important part of the park's resource management program. To control the size of the park's bison population, a portion of the herd is sold at the annual Buffalo Auction, the third Saturday in November.

The revenue received from this auction remains in the park and comprises a portion of the park's annual operating budget.
