Mina Lake Recreation Area

Nestled along the wooded shores of Mina Lake, Mina Recreation Area is is a water-lover's haven with plenty of room for boating, fishing and swimming. When you leave the water, a spacious campground, hiking trail, and several picnic areas will provide hours of family fun. The many trees provide shade for campers at Mina Lake.
   
Camping/Cabins

  • Located 11 miles W of Aberdeen off US Hwy 12  Location map (Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.)  DOT Road Report

  • Open year-round

  • Park entrance license required: $5/day/vehicle or $23 for an annual pass

  • Camping & Fees: $12/non-electrical, $16/electrical site. 37 sites (36 electrical). One wheelchair accessible site. Showers. Water. Dump station.

  • Camping Cabin: One wheelchair accessible cabin. Sleeps four people. $35/night. 

  • Lodge: Three-bedroom lodge. Sleeps 8 people. $135/night. Additional occupants $15 each. See photos.

  • Reservations: (800) 710-2267 or www.CampSD.com. Up to 90 days prior to arrival. Campsites May to Sept. Cabin year-round. Lodge reservations open Nov. 1 for the upcoming calendar year. Group reservations available, open Nov. 1 for upcoming season.

  • Recreation: Camping. Cabins. Boating. Fishing. Accessible hiking trail. Horseshoes. Picnic shelter, two picnic areas. Playground. Swimming. Volleyball.

  • Swimming: Swimming beach. No lifeguard on duty. Swim at your own risk.

  • Fishing/Boating: Boat ramp. Accessible fishing dock. Well-known as one of the best crappie lakes in northeast South Dakota. Also contains walleye, northern pike, perch, bass and bullhead. License required.

Mina Recreation Area has 37 shaded campsites. Each site has a picnic table, grill and paved camping pad. A modern comfort station provides showers and indoor bathrooms. An accessible camping cabin offers comfortable accommodations for people without a camper.
Lodge

A three-bedroom group lodge may be rented year-round at Mina Recreation Area. The lodge sleeps up to 8 people. Appliances include a range, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, gas grill, toaster, television and fireplace. In addition, most supplies including paper towels, soap, utensils and garbage bags are also provided. Pets are not allowed in the lodge. Click here for photos of the lodge.

 

History
Mina was one of the first man-made lakes in northeast South Dakota. Its beginning dates back to the 1930s, when area residents sought relief from years of drought.

In 1934, the Mina Dam was completed and the lake was named Shake Maza, a Lakota word for "shaped like a horseshoe." The name never quite caught-on, however, and it was later renamed in honor of a railroad president's daughter.
