Farm Island Recreation Area

Located east of Pierre, Farm Island attracts all types of visitors ... campers, swimmers, hikers, anglers, bird watchers and bicyclists. With easy access to Lake Sharpe and popular beaches and trails, this park stays busy throughout the year. Additionally, the park has ties to the Lewis and Clark expedition, which is detailed in the new Lewis and Clark family center.  A group of youngsters play in the sand at Farm Island Recreation Area.
   
Water Recreation
  • Located 4 miles east of Pierre off SD Highway 34  Location map (Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.)  DOT Road Report

  • Open year-round

  • Park entrance license required: $5/day/vehicle or $23 for an annual pass

  • Camping & Fees: $16/site. 90 campsites (all electrical) in two campgrounds. One accessible site. Showers. Water. Dump station.

  • Camping Cabins: Two cabins. Each sleep four people. $35/night. 

  • Reservations: (800) 710-2267 or www.CampSD.com. Up to 90 days prior to arrival. Campsites May to Sept. Cabins year-round. Group reservations available, open Nov. 1 for upcoming season.

  • Recreation: Camping. Cabins. Hiking/biking. See maps below. Bicycle rentals. Basketball. Boating. Canoe and paddleboat rentals. Cross-country skiing. Fishing. Game/equipment checkout. Historical interest: site of old Fort Sully and other historical sites. Three wheelchair accessible picnic shelters. Warming shelter. Playgrounds. Ski beach. Swimming. Polo field. Interpretive visitor center.

  • Swimming/Beaches: Swimming beach. Ski beach. No lifeguard on duty. Swim at your own risk.

  • Fishing/Boating: Fish cleaning stations. Wheelchair accessible fishing dock. Two boat ramps. Fishing license required.

Anglers can fish for walleye, smallmouth bass, white bass, northern pike and perch on this Missouri River reservoir. Two boat ramps, a popular swimming beach and a wheelchair accessible fishing dock allow visitors of all types and ages a chance to play in the water. Canoe and paddleboat rentals available.

Camping/Cabins
Ninety campsites in two campgrounds and two camping cabins, as well as a youth group camping area, are available from which to choose. Two comfort stations with showers are located in the main campground.

Nature Area & Trails
This park features an island nature area, which provides an outdoor classroom for visitors. Eight miles of hiking trails wind through the island and give hikers, walkers, cross-country skiers and bicyclists a chance for peace, quiet and nature observation. Bicycle rentals available.

Deer and a variety of birds are very common to see on the island. Trail users may also notice traces of beaver activity near the water, as well. Users also have access to a nature observation blind.
