In 2008, Game, Fish and Parks kicked off a new hunting access initiative, the Controlled Hunting Access Program (CHAP). CHAP is a cooperative effort between private landowners and Game, Fish and Parks to open up additional private land to public big game hunting.
Lands enrolled in CHAP do not function like those lands enrolled in Walk-In Area program. First, hunters using land enrolled in CHAP are required to check in with the landowner or at a self-serve check-in box to obtain a permission slip. When all the permission slips are gone for a particular date, no additional hunters will be allowed. Second, most CHAP have additional restrictions, so hunters need to be aware and observe these restrictions. Finally, payments to landowners will be based on hunter use rather than acres enrolled.
Rules for all CHAPS:
- No littering.
- No camping.
- No drinking alcohol.
- No fires.
- No smoking.
