Junior Naturalist Program Expands Across the State

The Parks and Recreation Division is launching a new statewide Junior Naturalist program during the 2008 summer season. Like the programs in the Southern Black Hills Region, kids between the ages of 7-12 are eligible to participate. However, the statewide program encompasses a larger area and invites kids to visit an assortment of other state parks and recreational sites. The program is aimed toward four key goals:
1) Having kids explore the natural and cultural heritage of South Dakota ...
2) Having kids gain knowledge in order to share with others ...
3) Having kids learn how to protect valuable resources in the state ...
4) Having kids become physically active in the outdoors ...
The requirements of the program are quite simple. First, the participants need to complete a minimum of five interpretive programs and at least three recreational activities offered in a South Dakota state park or recreation area. Examples include the ever-popular Walk in the Park guided hikes, evening campground programs, weekend nature activities, disc golf, swimming, canoeing, or snowshoeing.
Upon completion of the activities, the participants will have the program leader sign and date the Junior Naturalist card. The requirements must be completed within one calendar year (January - December). Once the card has all of the required information, the participants will receive an official South Dakota Junior Naturalist patch. One patch can be earned per child per year.
It is an exciting and educational program, and families are encouraged to get involved too. With new patches each year, the Parks and Recreation Division is hoping to attract some new “junior naturalists.” For a list of programs available in 2008 and participating state parks and recreation areas, visit www.SDparks.info or call the Division Office at (605) 773-3391.
