How to Apply
If you're interested in volunteering in the South Dakota state parks, check out the job descriptions and positions available above, then complete an application form. You can use the online application form or click here to download an application form in Adobe Acrobat format which you can print and send to: Volunteer Coordinator, Division of Parks and Recreation, 523 E. Capitol, Pierre, SD 57501-3182. A new application must be completed each year, and each time you wish to apply to a park where you have not worked before. If you like, you can also download the complete volunteer handbook in Adobe Acrobat format (file size 1.3mb).

  • Applications are accepted year round. Try to apply several months in advance of the time you would like to volunteer.
  • As you think about volunteering, please consider April/May and September/October. Needs for volunteers exist at these times before and after the busy season as well as during the summer.
  • After your application has been received by the volunteer coordinator in Pierre, a copy will be sent to each park in which you have shown interest. A member of the staff at each park will review the applications. You may be interviewed by phone or in person. This is your opportunity to receive information about the duties and responsibilities. References may be checked.
  • The park manager and the Park Volunteer Coordinator decide on who to bring to the park as volunteers. When this decision is made, a confirmation letter will be sent containing the volunteer position, dates, and location. Once you are at the park, you will meet with the Park Volunteer Coordinator to determine actual duties and your work schedule. You will also need to complete the Volunteer Information Sheet and the Volunteer Work Agreement.
  • Please be sure to ask enough questions to thoroughly understand the scope and details of your duties.

If you need more information on state park volunteer positions, contact the Volunteer Coordinator at Game, Fish and Parks, 523 East Capitol Avenue, Pierre, SD 57501-3182, or call 605-773-3930. You can also send an email request to SDParkVolunteers@state.sd.us.
