Volunteer Job Description
Campground Host
Work Schedule
Campground hosts each work a minimum of 24 hours per week (including
weekends and holidays) for a minimum of 30 days and a maximum of 90 days
performing a variety of visitor service and light maintenance duties
(see below). Hosts are considered "on-call" at all times of the day or
night. Hosts will take time off sometime Monday through Thursday. All
hosts will have specific duties and scheduled times to work.
Accommodations
Hosts are provided a free campsite located in or near the campgrounds. Each site
has electrical hook-ups. A few parks have full hook-ups for Hosts. Hosts provide
their own housing, personal items and transportation.
Duties
Duties and percentage of time spent on each will vary park to park and season to
season. The list below shows duties that may occur for this position. Upon
application, the park manager will indicate which duties apply.
Campground Host Site
- Greet visitors and is readily accessible to the
public
- Answer questions and provide park and local tourist
information
- Answer phone, voice mail and 2-way park radios
- Lock and unlock buildings
- Perform campground checks
- Post campground reservation information and mark
reserved sites
- May work at Visitor Center as needed
- Inform visitors of park rules and regulations and
notify park staff if enforcement action is needed

Cleaning/Maintenance
- Check restrooms and showers for cleanliness
- Clean sinks, mirrors, toilets and floors as
needed
- Restock paper supplies
- Pick up litter/debris and empty trash and
recyclables
- Clean campsites using rakes, shovels, blowers,
wheelbarrows, and brooms
- Mow and maintain lawns using riding/push mowers
and trimmers
- Weed shrub beds and trim vegetation
- Apply mulch and other top dressings
- Replace light bulbs as needed
- Water campsites, trees and lawn areas with hoses
and sprinklers as needed

Fee Collection
Hand out self-registration envelopes as needed
Collect fees for the sale of firewood and ice
Register campers using computerized reservation system
May collect fees at check-in booth during special events or
during the off-season as needed
Follow established SD Division of Parks and Recreation
procedures for the handling and reconciling of State of South Dakota monies

Interpretation
Assist with the Family Naturalist Program
May assist park staff at campground evening programs, tours
or other interpretive activities

Emergency Operations
- Share storm warning information with park
visitors
- In the absence of park staff, take appropriate
action during visitor or maintenance emergencies, such as:
- identifying problems
- obtaining relevant information
- notifying appropriate authorities (park
staff, police, ambulance, etc.)
- assisting authorities as needed
Special Projects
- Assist with special projects related to campground
operation
Equipment Operation
During the performance of the duties listed above, volunteers may operate
and help maintain a variety of park equipment, including:
- pickup trucks
- multi-passenger vans
- electric and gas powered golf carts
- riding and push mowers
- backpack and walk-behind blowers, power
trimmers and weed eaters
