Volunteer Job Description
Program
Volunteer

Work Schedule
If program volunteers are staying at volunteer campsites, each program volunteer works a minimum of 24 hours per week (including weekends and holidays) for a minimum of 30 days and a maximum of 90 days enhancing programs in the park. If program volunteers are not staying at a volunteer campsite, the total work hours per week will be determined by the volunteer and the Park Manager together. Program volunteers will work with the Park Manager to determine specific job duties and scheduled times to work.

Accommodations
Volunteer campsites have electrical hook-ups. Volunteers provide their own housing, personal items and transportation to the program sites in the park.

Duties
Duties and percentage of time spent on each will vary park to park and season to season. The list below shows duties that may occur for this position. Upon application, the park manager will indicate which duties apply.

Program Preparation

  • Assist the seasonal park naturalists/programmers or visitor services staff and presentation with programming at the park
  • Research program topics or ideas
  • Assist with the Junior Naturalist Program
  • Prepare craft projects and lead them
  • Provide evening campfire programs, tours or other interpretive activities
  • Assist with school and other groups
  • Distribute program schedules in the campgrounds
  • Assemble displays and bulletin boards
  • Stock the brochure racks
  • Other duties, will specify

Cleaning/Maintenance

  • Provide upkeep and repair of the interpretive areas
  • Weed gardens and flower beds
  • Groom hiking trails
  • Provide general maintenance of comfort stations
  • Other duties, will specify

Fee Collection/Clerical Work

  • Assist at the visitor center with merchandise sales (where applicable)
  • Assist in collecting fees at check-in booth during special events and/or in the off-season
  • Follow established SD Division of Parks and Recreation procedures for handling and reconciling of State of South Dakota monies
  • Perform clerical duties such as computer input, filing and answering the phone
  • Other duties, will specify

Special Projects as needed

  • Assist with special projects related to visitor center and park operations. These projects can be structured to the volunteer’s interests and talents
