Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio)

    Where did they come from?
  • Originates from Asia and Eastern Europe.

    Where can they be found in South Dakota?
  • They can be found in most bodies of water throughout South Dakota.

    What do they look like?

  • They are gold/green in color with large scales, along with two barbells that hang from the rear of their upper lip. They can reach up to 4 feet long and weigh over 60lbs

    Why are Common Carp a problem?
  • Common Carp juveniles closely resemble several bait and rough fish species. These fish are highly adaptive, prolific spawners, quickly outgrow potential controls by predation, and compete with native fish for food resources which includes native snails and mussels.

    How are Common Carp spread?
  • Many times Common Carp are mistaken and used as bait when they are juviniles.
