Economic Importance of Fishing
A 2001 Harris poll identified recreational fishing as the top outdoor
leisure time activity of Americans. Surveys indicated that 95 percent of all
Americans support legal recreational fishing. Nearly nine of ten believe
outdoor recreation benefits the environment because it gives them good
reason to care about natural resources.
Every five years the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conducts a survey
through the U.S. Census Bureau that includes information on the economic
impact of hunting and fishing by state. According to survey figures from the
2001 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated
Recreation, South Dakota enjoys a $366 million boost.

$12 million in state sales and motor fuel taxes. There are nearly 4,500 jobs
that are related to fishing activities that generate $89 million in salaries
and wages. |
