Naturalist-Led Programs for Groups at The Outdoor Campus

  Group Programs for Summer 2008

Groups can schedule their own naturalist-led program by choosing from the programs in this brochure and calling 362-2777 for open dates and staff availability. Please be sure to read the below information regarding group requirements!

Registration opens Friday, March 28th for summer group programs. No group programs for summer will be scheduled before this date. Call 362-2777 for information and scheduling.

When: In June, July and August groups may schedule programs in the mornings and afternoons as naturalists are available. Group program times fill quickly and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Group size: Minimum group size is 10; maximum group size is 20.

Other programs: Groups of 9 or smaller should register for programs found in our community programs brochure.

Cost: All youth programs are free! Thank a hunter or angler for supporting our education efforts!

How many programs? Groups may schedule only one program per season to ensure equal program availability to all groups.

Confirmation letter: After scheduling, we will send the group leader a confirmation letter with instructions and a waiver if the program requires it. Please be sure to read this information thoroughly!

Waiver: All individuals signed up for boating, fishing, cooking, fly tying, orienteering, map and compass, GPS or firearm (BB gun, archery) classes must have a waiver signed by a parent/guardian in order to participate. We will send the waiver form with the confirmation letter.

Chaperones: We require at least one adult chaperone for each youth group, and one licensed adult for each youth angler age 7 and under. All adults age 16 and older chaperoning fishing programs must have a valid SD fishing license.

Special needs: Please inform us of any special needs, mobility concerns or health problems (including allergies) when scheduling.

Other Options at The Outdoor Campus

Permanent Orienteering Course
The Outdoor Campus has several introductory and intermediate orienteering courses set up in our park. You may borrow the maps Monday through Fridays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.; and Sundays between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. If you prefer some instruction beforehand, your group may schedule an orienteering class with one of our naturalists, or you can sign up for one of our community classes. Another Group Option

Group Volunteer Opportunities

We get many inquiries about projects for scout groups, high school groups and others who are interested in one-time ways to get involved at The Outdoor Campus. We have some projects to offer to your groups during the upcoming summer season. Please note that we do not offer opportunities for court-sentenced community service.

Butterfly Garden
The Outdoor Campus has a large butterfly garden in the “backyard” of our property.  We need volunteers all spring and summer long to help plant flowers and pull weeds.  You don’t need a green thumb. Our horticulturist will work by your side, leading your group in a rewarding experience!

Removing garbage from trails
Sertoma Park is a very popular park & it’s close to a lot of shopping areas which means we accumulate a lot of litter.  Help us keep the park beautiful by walking the trails picking up litter.  We’ll provide your group with all of the necessary tools!

Individual signed waivers are required for community service groups.  Please call Alison Eden, Outdoor Campus volunteer coordinator 362-2777 to schedule your service time!
