Information on the Eurasian collared dove: A new species to the United States, the Eurasian collared dove originally came from Asia. This dove was first introduced to the Bahama Islands around 1975, spread to Florida, and is ever expanding its range across the country. Populations already are established in many eastern and midwestern states, including South Dakota. The scientific name, Streptopeleia decaocto, literally means a collared (streptos) dove (peleia). These "resident" doves frequent towns and readily come to feeders for seed. Watch for these birds, as they can be expected to turn up more frequently in South Dakota. |
