Administered by the USDA Farm Service Agency, the Farmable Wetlands Program (FWP) is a continuous CRP practice available for eligible farmed wetlands and associated uplands. Wetlands 10 acres in size or smaller meeting cropping history requirements are eligible. USDA will make annual payments on wetlands 5.0 acres or smaller in size.
SD GF&P offers an additional incentive payment on certain contracts with wetlands larger than 5.0 acres in size that are ineligible for USDA payment. SD GF&P will prioritize FWP contracts that maximize the upland-to-wetland ratio, are in close proximity to other wetland complexes and upland nesting habitat and those that restore wetland hydrology to the maximum extent possible.
Landowners with eligible contracts that meet this condition need to simply forward a copy of their CRP contract and an aerial photo to a SD GFP Habitat Biologist. The incentive payment will be determined by the average soil rental rate, upland to wetland ratio, and the duration of the contract.
