Habitat Fencing

Livestock exclusion fences can be a valuable tool for improving or protecting habitat on your property.   Examples of habitat fencing include protecting woody habitat, fencing off wetlands and adjacent uplands, or simply creating nesting cover by fencing off a portion of a pasture.

South Dakota Game Fish and Parks will cost share 100% of fencing supplies up to $1,000 per cooperator per year for habitat fencing materials.  Habitat fences must be permanent with mobile electric fencing not qualifying.

Cooperators must maintain habitat fences for 10 years. South Dakota law (SDCL 41-2-23) requires that reasonable public hunting be provided when habitat management funds are expended on private lands.
