Area where fox snake is found in South Dakota

Characteristics:

* Yellowish to light brown back with bold blotches

* Yellowish belly with dark blotches

* Broad, rounded, unpointed nose

* Weakly keeled scales; no keels on side of body

* Divided anal plate

* Nonvenomous

* Diet: Small mammal, birds, and their eggs

* Habitat: Open prairies to woodland river areas

* Distribution: Extreme southeastern South Dakota
