Area where ringneck snake is found in South Dakota

Characteristics:

* Dark colored—black or gray—upper body

* Bright yellow or yellow-orange ring around the neck

* Yellow to orange belly with black spots

* Underside of tail usually redorange

* Smooth scales

* Nonvenomous

* Diet: earthworms, other small insects, and frogs

* Habitat: rocky hillsides of open woodlands

* Distribution: extreme southeastern South Dakota
