WANDERING GARTER SNAKE

Area where wandering garter snake is found in South Dakota

Characteristics:

* A dull brown to greenish body color

* Black bars on lips

* Brown head with yellow spots

* Yellow or orange middorsal stripe on each side of body on scale rows 2 and 3 (counting from the belly scales up)

* Keeled scales

* Nonvenomous

* Diet: fish, frogs and other aquatic vertebrates, insects, and earthworms

* Habitat: grassy areas near ponds and streams

* Distribution: Black Hills
