License Requirements and HuntSAFE Certification Students who successfully complete a HuntSAFE course receive an identification card containing their name, date of certification, a certification number and the signature of the instructor. Until the student is 16, a parent or guardian must present the HuntSAFE certification card to a license vendor when purchasing the young person’s hunting license. The parent or guardian agrees, by signing the license application, to accompany the student in the field while he or she is hunting until they are 16. A youth small game license, which entitles the holder to hunt non-game animals and small game animals such as pheasants, grouse and rabbits, costs $5. If the youth wishes to hunt migratory game birds, such as waterfowl, doves or cranes, they must also purchase a Migratory Bird Certification stamp. The cost of this stamp is $3. A youth small game License, with or without the Migratory Bird Certification, expires on January 31 of the year following the year printed on the license. If the holder of a youth small game license becomes 16 during the hunting season, he or she may continue to use the youth small game license for the remainder of the season but must purchase and attach a federal Migratory Bird Stamp if he or she hunts migratory birds. The requirement that young hunters be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or responsible adult (age 18 or older) while hunting expires at age 16, except when hunting doves. A parent, guardian, or responsible adult, age 21 or older, must accompany young dove hunters until they are age 18. |
