How to Become an Instructor

HuntSAFE Instructor

Thank you for your interest in becoming a HuntSAFE instructor.  In 2006, more than 260 volunteer instructors took part in teaching firearms safety, conservation and responsibility to thousands of students across the state.  If you would like to become a member of this elite team contact a Conservation Officer in your county or area to get an application.  If that position is currently vacant, you may also contact the HuntSAFE office in Pierre at (605) 773-4506.  Requirements to become a HuntSAFE volunteer include a minimum age of 18, completion of a state approved safety course, attending and/or participating in an ongoing class and a willingness to undergo a basic background check.  Local Conservation Officers and their Supervisors have the ultimate responsibility for approving new instructors.

Bow Hunter Education Instructor

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Bow Hunter Education instructor. South Dakota is one of 14 states that require mandatory bow hunter education.  To become an instructor, contact the HuntSAFE office in Pierre at (605) 773-4506 for an application.  Your name and contact information will be forwarded to a Master Instructor in your area for follow-up training.  Requirements to become an instructor include a minimum age of 18, attendance and/or participation in two classes with a certified instructor and a willingness to undergo a basic background check.  Representatives of the South Dakota Master Instructor program and the Hunter Education Coordinator for the State of South Dakota have the ultimate responsibility for approving new instructors.
