Regulations ~ Where to Ride
 

ATVs, Motorcycles, Motocross Bikes and Golf Carts
At Oahe Downstream and Revheim Bay OHV areas
  • ATVOHVs are not required to be licensed or to have a park entrance license.

  • Riding is allowed only on designated areas inside the OHV area.

ATVs, Motorcycles, Motocross Bikes and Golf Carts
In all other state park areas
  • ATVPark visitors must license both South Dakota and out-of-state vehicles. A valid park entrance license is also required.

  • If not licensed and/or does not have a valid park entrance license, then the vehicle must remain in the truck or on the trailer.

  • Each vehicle operated must be equipped with a horn, mirror, headlight, brake light, brakes and a license plate.

  • All operators must be 14 years of age or older and possess a valid driver's license.

  • Park visitors can only operate vehicles on designated park roads in South Dakota state parks and recreation areas or in the state OHV area.

  • Park visitors are not allowed to operate vehicles on paved or unpaved trails or on shorelines or beaches.

  • Drivers must obey all traffic regulations.

  • Eye protection is required of all users on public/park roads unless a windshield is in place.

  • Helmets are required of all users under 18 years of age on public/park roads.

Mopeds
  • Moped/Large ScooterMopeds with a combustion engine under 50cc are not required to be licensed.

  • A park entrance license is not required.

  • Mopeds must be equipped with a horn, mirror, headlight, brake light and brakes.

  • All operators must be 14 years of age or older and have a valid driver's license.

  • Park visitors can only operate vehicles on designated park roads when in South Dakota state parks and recreation areas.

  • Park visitors are not allowed to operate vehicles on paved or unpaved trails or on shorelines or beaches.

  • Drivers must obey all traffic regulations.

Electric/Gas Scooters
  • A park entrance license is not required on scooters with engines under 50cc.

  • It is required for scooters to have a horn, mirror, headlight, brake light
    and brakes.

  • Park visitors can only operate vehicles on designated park roads when in South Dakota state parks and recreation areas.

  • Park visitors are not allowed to operate vehicles on paved or unpaved trails or on shorelines or beaches.

  • Drivers must obey all traffic regulations.

Where to Ride
In South Dakota State Parks
The state ORV area is located in Oahe Downstream Recreation Area, near Fort Pierre.The Oahe Downstream OHV Area features almost 400 acres of hilly grassland, river bluff and vegetated shale slopes for you to explore. Boundaries are marked, but there are no designated trails.

The Revheim Bay OVH Area features a 1.1 mile long track.

When in the OHV areas, vehicles are not required to be licensed or to have a park entrance license. Riding is allowed only on designated areas inside the OHV area. Click here for information on using off-road vehicles in other state park areas.

Camping is available at Oahe Downstream Recreation Area’s three campgrounds which feature 206 electrical campsites and four wheelchair accessible camping cabins. Indian Creek Recreation Area near Revheim Bay has 124 electrical campsites and two camping cabins. To make reservations, visit www.CampSD.com or call 1-800-710-2267.

In addition to the ORV area, many recreational opportunities exist at the Oahe Downstream, including hiking and biking trails, a nine-hole disc golf course, swimming beach, sand volleyball court, playground equipment, boating, fishing, an archery area and rifle range.

Prohibited from snowmobile trails
Off-road vehicles are prohibited from the snowmobile trails system at all times of the year. Snowmobiles are permitted only during the designated snowmobile season.
