Other Wildlife Associated Activities

There is additional use of wildlife resources in South Dakota besides hunting and fishing. According to the 2001 survey by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, there are 66.1 million people who participate in wildlife watching in the United States. They spend $38.4 billion directly on wildlife watching activities.

South Dakota has one of the highest percentages of state population involved in these activities. There are an estimated 358,000 wildlife watchers in this state. They spend $92 million (primarily travel, equipment and food) and account for $3.8 million in state sales tax revenue.
