South Dakota Public Lands Information


This interactive tool allows you to view maps and other information about public lands in South Dakota.  Just click and drag to outline a portion of the map, and the display will zoom in to the area you've selected.  You can can do this repeatedly to get increasing detail, and if you zoom in far enough aerial photography will be displayed.

To download the files used on the interactive map for use on a handheld GPS click here. In the search box if you type in GFP it will provide you with the GFP managed data. There are also a number of other layers available from other state agencies, roads, county boundaries, etc.

Tool Bar Functions

Clicking on a toolbar icon changes the screen display or the way your cursor behaves, as follows:

Zoom In – Zooms in on the current map click the tool, draw a rectangle
Zoom Out – Zooms out on the current map click the tool, draw a rectangle
Zoom Full – Zooms to the full extent of the map (state)
 Pan Pan  – Click and drag the map to re-center the map.
 Identify Identify – Displays attribute data on any feature on the map by clicking on the feature.  *That feature’s layer must be active.
 Measure Measure Distance – Measure distance and area on the map.  Click on the map to measure distance from one click to the next.  Double click to stop.
 Select by Rectangle Select with Rectangle – Activate this tool to select features of the active layer.  Click on the map and drag a rectangle around the desired features to select. *That feature’s layer must be active.
 Select by Rectangle Select with Polygon – Activate this tool to select features of the active layer.  Click on the map and draw a polygon around the desired features to select. *That feature’s layer must be active.
Clear Selected Features – Click this tool to clear the selected set of features from the active layer. 
Zoom To – Click this tool to Zoom to County, Lat/Long or Section Township and Range. 
Print – Click this tool to Print the area in the map display. When the print page pops up you can also click on the title of the map and change the text 
Create PDF – Click this tool open a PDF map of the area in the map display. When the PDF page pops up you can save the map for later use.  
Bookmarks – Bookmarks are saved locations that the Department of Game, Fish and Parks can share with the public. They could be new Game Production Areas, special management areas or other areas of interest.  


Layers / Legend

View Legend or Layers Menu – Toggle the Map Legend and Layer List On/Off

You can select what features you want to display by checking which layers are visible in the layers menu (as shown below).  Just check or uncheck the box in front of the layer name to show or not show that feature. 

This menu also allows you to get more information about a particular layer by clicking on the layer name to make the layer active, then clicking the "Identify button" Once you've done this, you can use your pointer to click on the active feature to get more information, e.g. acreage, road names, towns, etc. This also is how you make a selection, the layer needs to be active before you can make selection. After a layer has been set to active, it will show up with shaded yellow bar, and under active layers will display the name. (see photos below) The results of your selection or identify will be displayed on the results tab.   Click here to open viewer in a new window now.


 

 


Pick Area

Pick Area   – Allows the user to select a Game Production Area(GPA) by Name. You can sort GPA's by county, region, or classification. You can also type the name of the Area in a dialog box and pick it from the results. After the user selects the GPA the map will zoom to the location and the user can view the boundary information as well as the habitat inventory.


 


Area Info

General Tab   – Users can find out detailed information about the Game Production Area, it will display the general location, Total Acreage, County information and much more.


 

Wildlife Inventory   – Users can find out what the primary and secondary species that are being managed for on the Game Production Area.


 

Habitat (Mapped) Inventory   – Users can view detailed information about the habitat on Game Production Areas. By clicking on the name of the habitat and then clicking the View button, the user will be presented with a pop-up window with specific information about the habitat selected.
