South Dakota Public Lands Information


This interactive tool allows you to view maps and other information about public lands in South Dakota.  Just click and drag to outline a portion of the map, and the display will zoom in to the area you've selected.  You can can do this repeatedly to get increasing detail, and if you zoom in far enough aerial photography will be displayed.

Tool Bar Functions

Clicking on a toolbar icon changes the screen display or the way your cursor behaves, as follows:

View Legend or Layers Menu (Layers Menu shows by default)  – Toggle the Map Legend and Layer List On/Off
Zoom In – Zooms in on the current map click the tool, draw a rectangle
Zoom Out – Zooms out on the current map click the tool, draw a rectangle
Zoom Full – Zooms to the full extent of the map (state)
 Pan Pan  – Click and drag the map to re-center the map.
 Identify Identify – Displays attribute data on any feature on the map by clicking on the feature.  *That feature’s layer must be active.
 Measure Measure Distance – Measure distance on the map.  Click on the map to measure distance from one click to the next.  Double click to stop.
 Set Units Set Map Units – Activate this tool to set/change the map units being displayed/used on the map.
 Buffer Buffer Selected Features – Activate this tool to create a buffer around the selected features of the active layer.
 Select by Rectangle Select Features – Activate this tool to select features of the active layer.  Click on the map and drag a rectangle around the desired features to select.
Draw on Map  – Activate this tool to enable drawing on the map.  Click on the map where you want a line segment to begin/end.  After drawing your shape you can email the map and legend to any South Dakota State email address as attachments.
Clear Selected Features – Click this tool to clear the selected set of features from the active layer. 
Print the current view


Layers / Legend

View Legend or Layers Menu – Toggle the Map Legend and Layer List On/Off

You can select what features you want to display by checking which layers are visible in the layers menu (as shown below).  Just check or uncheck the box in front of the layer name to show or not show that feature.  After you change the visible layers, you need to click the button at the bottom of the layers menu to show the changes.

This menu also allows you to get more information about a particular layer by clicking the circle to make the layer active, then clicking the "Identify button" Once you've done this, you can use your pointer to click on the active feature to get more information, e.g. acreage, road names, towns, etc.   Click here to open viewer in a new window now.
