Nontoxic Shot Mandatory for Small Game Hunting

Nontoxic shot is mandatory for small game hunting with shotguns in South Dakota on all:

  • State Game Production Areas
  • State Parks and Recreation Areas and Lakeside Use Areas
  • U.S. ARMY Corps of Engineers land
  • Bureau of Reclamation land managed by Game, Fish and Parks
  • Federal Waterfowl Production Areas and National Wildlife Refuges
  • State Water Access Areas
  • National Waterfowl Refuges

Additionally, shotgun target shooting with lead shot is prohibited on the following public lands:

  • State Game Production Areas
  • State Parks and Recreation Areas and Lakeside Use Areas
  • State Water Access Areas
  • U.S. Bureau of Reclamation lands managed by Game, Fish, and Parks

Hunters should use nontoxic shot when hunting in public rights-of-way (ditches) adjacent to public lands that require the use of nontoxic shot.

**However, lead shot will still be allowed for small game on private land, Walk-In Areas, U.S. Forest Service National Grasslands and on state School and Public Lands.
