South Dakota Grouse Seasons

South Dakota grouse hunting is open to residents and nonresidents.  A small game license is needed to hunt grouse/prairie chickens. 


SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, PRAIRIE CHICKEN AND RUFFED GROUSE:

Season dates: Sept. 20, 2008 - Jan. 4, 2009

Exception: Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge in Bennett County is open Oct. 18, 2008 - Jan. 4, 2008.

DAILY LIMIT. 3 (any combination)

POSSESSION LIMIT. 15 (any combination), taken according to daily limit.
Limit accrues at the rate of 3 birds a day, and 15 birds may not be possessed until after the 5th day of hunting.

SHOOTING HOURS.  Sunrise to Sunset. For Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge, shooting hours are the same as pheasant shooting hours.


SAGE GROUSE:

Open Unit:  Public lands in Harding and Butte counties west of U.S. Highway 85. Private lands, except those leased for public hunting, are not open.  Public lands include those owned or managed by U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, State School and Public Lands Office, and private land leased for public hunting (Walk-In Areas).
